Gocup Road intersection
November 2022
Work is continuing on a new roundabout at the Snowy Mountains Highway and Gocup Road intersection in Tumut to replace a high traffic, four-way intersection, improving safety and traffic flow.
Installing the new roundabout follows calls from the community for a safer intersection at this junction of the key local transport link.
Roundabouts reduce the risk of road users being seriously injured by minimising the impact angles and lower severity crashes in the event of an accident.
Stage one initial works are now complete. This included setting up the work site on Gocup Road and removing selected vegetation and trees to improve visibility. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2023.

Long-awaited improvements to a notorious Tumut intersection are due to start early in 2022.
Construction of the $15 million upgrade of the intersection of the Gocup Road and Snowy Mountains Highway is due to begin early in 2022.
The $15 million project will include a new 50-metre wide roundabout, improved visibility at the intersection, native revegetation and the removal of some trees, improved lighting, undergrounding of overhead powerlines, sealing of the shared path entry to the Tumut wetlands and minor provisions for improved safety.
This project comes after interim safety works were completed in April last year, which included additional signage, new line marking and removal of vegetation.
The construction works are expected to take about 12 months to complete.
Residents of Snowy Valleys had longed been concerned about the intersection of Gocup Road and Snowy Mountains Highway. Sadly, it was the scene of a fatal accident in May 2020.
In June 2020, I raised the issue in parliament, asking the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole, when action would be taken to improve the safety of the intersection. https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Hansard/Pages/HansardResult.aspx#/docid/HANSARD-1323879322-110448/link/2237
In August 2020, I tabled a petition, signed by more than 2000 people and calling for action on the intersection, in parliament. https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/la/petitions/Pages/tabled-paper-details.aspx?pk=77907

The government announced in October 2020 that a roundabout would be built at the intersection, after the Minister visited the site for himself in August 2020.
I have spoken extensively with both members of the local community and with Transport for NSW about the best way to improve safety at this intersection. I have been told by Transport representatives that their research indicates that a roundabout at the current location is the best option.
