Reassurance and support follow Wagga Primary School fire

It was heartbreaking to see the fire-torn ruins of such a wonderful heritage building at Wagga Public School today.

After meeting with Director of Education, I was reassured the NSW Department would move heaven and earth to ensure the infant school was up and running for day one of term one.

I understand the school’s principal Leanne Harvey, is also confident all students will be accommodated as scheduled. In the meantime, a space to work and access electronic resources has been provided for staff at the Wagga Education Office.

In a statement provided by the department, temporary buildings are to be installed as soon as possible and will remain until the former building can be restored.

Counselling will be made available to students once school recommences and - confirmation pending - the vacation care service is expected to be operational from Monday 14 January.

I would like to thank the department for its swift response following this devastating event.

I would also like to say a big thank you to the emergency service crews, who were able to stop the fire from spreading further on Saturday.

Firefighters endured the staggering heatwave to extinguish the flames that engulfed and destroyed the historic structure.
