Great to be part of NSW Fire and Rescue's demonstration this morning, highlighting the importance of fire safety this winter.

Here are some of the numbers on NSW residential fires:

• 19172 residential fires in the last five years,

• 414 injuries and 20 preventable fatalities per year,

• 3 minutes is all it takes for fire to engulf a home,

• 2 breaths of toxic smoke before you lose consciousness.

Perhaps most shocking is that a working smoke alarm is only present at 50% of the homes NSW Fire and Rescue are called out to.

Please make sure your smoke alarms are working and have batteries in them this winter.
