This morning I joined my Parliamentary colleagues Helen Dalton, Cate Faehrmann, Alex Greenwich and Aileen MacDonald in Martin Place for an event for Gambling Harm Awareness Week.
The event was sponsored by the Wesley Mission’s campaign on gambling harm, and led by the Reverend Stu Cameron.
Members of Parliament and representatives of gambling reform organisations all took a swing at the piñata - a light-hearted take on a very serious issue.
Once we bust it open, it was filled with eviction notices, photos of broken families and overdue bills, and I felt that the image of the poker machine hiding all that misery is a very telling one.
It’s time to stop making money out of misery.
We need to bring in cashless gaming.
Enough is enough.
