NEW TUMUT HOSPITAL PROJECT DELIVERING LOCAL JOBS

The Tumut Hospital Redevelopment project is on track to deliver improvements to health facilities and infrastructure in the local regional and is supporting the local economy.

At today’s main concrete pour for the project, Nationals MLC, Wes Fang, said to date more than 60 per cent of all sub-contractors and suppliers that have been engaged on the project are from Tumut or the immediate regional area.

“One of those is Holcim – their Tumut plant is supplying concrete being used in the construction of the floor of the new building,” Mr Fang said.

Almost 80 per cent of people working on the site have been from Tumut or the immediate regional area. 

“Subcontractors and suppliers that have been engaged on the $50 million redevelopment project including Garry Gillespie Constructions (decking, plant room slab installation), Gray Surveyors, A Murray & Sons (temporary hydraulics, enabling works), National Cranes & Engineering (site shed installation), S & M Withers (temporary car park), Tumut Building Supplies, Tumut Tree Surgery (tree removal) and Tumut Valley Fencing (site fencing).

“The value of hospital redevelopments such as Tumut extend far beyond healthcare to provide positive economic and social benefits within our communities.

“Today’s concrete pour is an exciting step towards delivering world-class healthcare to the Tumut region,” Mr Fang said.

Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr, said “I am delighted to see the long-awaited Tumut Hospital redevelopment has reached this important milestone. 

“The community had been asking for these improvements for a long time, so today’s concrete pour is a significant milestone.

 “I am looking forward to being able to walk through the door of the completed project,” Mr McGirr said. 

The main contractor, Richard Crookes Constructions is also directing 6 per cent of the project spend to Aboriginal participation, including Aboriginal employment, engagement of Aboriginal owned businesses, approved formal training or consultation with Aboriginal organisations.

“The new health facility building is on track to be completed by late 2021. After the concrete pours, the community can expect to see structural steel starting to be erected and roof framing underway”, said Mr Fang 

The Tumut Hospital Redevelopment includes:

 ·         Emergency Department

·         Inpatient Unit

·         Birthing Unit

·         Operating Theatre and Day Surgery

·         Wellness Centre – community health; community mental health; community drug and alcohol services; outpatient services; ambulatory clinics; space for education and group therapy services

·         Quiet Room for families and a Cultural Room

·         Clinical support services including a Medical Imaging Unit; Pharmacy; and Pathology with on-site laboratory

·         Administration and non-clinical support areas

·         Car parking and helipad

The Redevelopment is forecast to be completed late 2021 before the services are transferred over and the new facility is operational.  The final works including demolition of old hospital buildings, landscaping, car parking and constructions of the new helipad will take place in 2022.
