READING, ‘RITING AND RECOVERY FOR BUSHFIRE-IMPACTED SCHOOLS IN THE RIVERINA

It’s not the traditional three ‘R’s taught in school - instead, the NSW Government has combined reading and ‘riting with recovery from natural disasters, by donating $6,250 worth of books to Riverina schools impacted by the 2020 Dunns Road bushfire.

Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall today presented the books to representatives from Batlow Technology High School, Adelong Public School, Rosewood Public School, Talbingo Public School and Tumbarumba Public School.

“When the Black Summer bushfires hit, communities in the Snowy Valleys were heavily impacted and unfortunately students in local schools were no exception, with many seeing the impacts firsthand,” Mr Marshall said.

“As many of us have experienced, the right book at the right time can have a big impact on your life, so it is great the NSW Government can donate these fantastic books.

“We hope students enjoy these resources and take away a few ideas to better equip them to support bushfire recovery and manage land and the environment in the future.”

The books cover a diverse range of topics, but all are connected with the land and environment, including Australian classics such as Storm Boy, as well as stories covering drought, wildlife rescue and kids on the land. The book donation was funded though the Riverina Local Land Services Corporate Social Responsibility program.

Riverina Local Land Services General Manager Ray Willis said the donation complements the work the agency does with landholders to support bushfire recovery, including workshops, fencing support and environmental rehabilitation.

“Our staff live and work in the communities they serve, so we are always looking for ways we can give back,” Mr Willis said.

“These books will be a great resource for current and future students, providing valuable information and ideas on how they can help shape the landscape.

“We were also proud to buy the books locally and would like to thank Collins Booksellers in Wagga for also supporting the donation.”
