HOUSING BOOST FOR WAGGA

Twelve new social homes have been completed four weeks ahead of schedule in Wagga Wagga, delivering modern, energy-efficient housing for local residents while supporting the next stage of the Tolland Renewal.

The Spring Street project replaces three ageing properties with new, modern homes for an estimated 19 residents.

It means there is now four times more social housing on the site, each built to the Silver Standard to support safer, more accessible living. Two apartments also include additional enhanced accessibility features specifically designed to better support people living with a disability.

Located within walking distance of bus services to the Wagga Wagga CBD, the homes have been designed to help residents stay connected to services, transport and community life.

Built by Monarch Building Solutions Pty Ltd, the development supported an estimated 31 local jobs during construction.

The new homes will play a key role in the broader renewal of social housing in Wagga, supporting tenant relocations linked to the Tolland Renewal, a major 10–12-year project to deliver modern social housing in Wagga Wagga.

Subdivision works for Stage 1A of the Tolland Renewal Project are planned to begin in April this year, with the first new homes in the renewal expected for completion in 2027.

It’s all part of the NSW Government’s $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW program, which will deliver 8,400 new social homes across the state, including regional and rural areas.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson:

“These new homes at Spring Street have been delivered four weeks early, something almost unheard of in housing construction, and in the middle of housing crisis every week matters. This completion means more people in Wagga Wagga can move into safe, modern housing sooner.

“This development significantly increases the supply of social housing on the site, replacing ageing properties with high-quality homes that are energy efficient, accessible and well located.

“Spring Street is also an important part of the long-term Tolland Renewal. By delivering new homes now, we can support tenant relocations and continue progressing the staged redevelopment of the estate.

“We are committed to delivering more homes in regional NSW and ensuring communities like Wagga Wagga have access to safe, secure housing for the future.”

Quotes attributable to the Independent Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr:

“The delivery of these new social properties is great news for our community, providing modern, accessible homes at a time when demand continues to grow for quality housing.

“More needs to be done, but the early completion of these properties is a significant step forward in providing homes to people in need and I congratulate the government for delivering these properties ahead of schedule.

“The best way to ease the housing crisis is, of course, to build more homes - so it’s exciting to look forward to subdivision works starting on the next major stage of the Tolland Renewal Project, with the delivery of hundreds of brand new homes to have a significant, positive impact on meeting the demand for housing in Wagga.”
