Today Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole, visited the Gocup Rd Snowy Mountains Highway Intersection to announce the decision to install a roundabout, following an audit by the Centre for Road Safety.
The experts of the Centre have recommended a roundabout as the safest solution, however, I acknowledge that many in the community believe an alternative intersection is the answer.
The community has been advocating for improvements to this intersection for decades, with more than 2000 people adding their signatures to a petition calling for improved safety measures after it was launched in June.
I am glad the NSW Government has listened to the community and is treating the need for safety improvements at the intersection of Gocup Road and the Snowy Mountains Highway as a priority.
We now know what the community has been saying for years is true. A Centre for Road Safety report has listed the Gocup Road intersection in the top two to three per cent in the state for risk.
I believe the decision for a roundabout is a very important step in improving the safety of the intersection. I am looking forward to reviewing the designs and encourage the community to do so. I hope these will be available by the end of the year.
