SAFER SCHOOL JOURNEYS FOR LOCAL KIDS

Children at two Wagga Wagga schools will experience safer school journeys with the school zone on Fernleigh Road to be extended this month.

The Independent Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr McGirr, said the existing school zone will be extended 475 metres from west of Hely Avenue to 180 metres east of the Glenfield Road intersection.

“Transport for NSW carried out a speed zone review in this area, which took into account the location of a new road and access being built to Saint Mary Mackillop Colleges from Fernleigh Road,” Dr McGirr said.

“This new access road will be the main entry to the school for vehicles and buses during school pick-up and drop-off times.

“Extending the speed zone will provide safer journeys for students at Saint Mary MacKillop Colleges and nearby Henschke Primary School, both on Fernleigh Road, while adding just nine seconds to journeys.”

Flashing lights and signs for the school zone extension will be installed Wednesday 28 August between 7am and 6pm and is expected to take two days to complete, weather permitting.

Signage on the approaches to the school zone on Quail and Hunter streets will also be installed.

The school zone will be operational 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days.

Outside of the school zone the speed limit on Fernleigh Road will remain at 50 km/h.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.
