DR JOE WELCOMES FORESTRY PLAN

The Independent Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr, has welcomed the NSW Government’s appointment of a panel to lead consultation on a Forestry Industry Action Plan for the state.

Dr McGirr urged all relevant stakeholders to have their say on ways in which the state can achieve the best balance between ensuring the continuation of a sustainable timber industry and positive environmental outcomes.

“It is encouraging to note that the plan will focus on the future of hardwood and softwood plantations – with the latter being critical to the future of softwoods economies in the Wagga Wagga electorate – while examining the role of State Forests in maximising economic, environmental and social outcomes,” he said.

The inclusion of former Labor MLC Mick Veitch on the panel is especially welcome as he brings strong local connections to the Snowy Valleys and a deep understanding of rural and regional issues – qualities that will provide excellent insights into the future of the forestry industry.

“It is important that plantations can be expanded, maintaining jobs and delivering ongoing fire protection to communities.

“A flourishing sustainable timber industry balanced with good environmental outcomes will encourage economic and social growth in our timber communities for the benefit of generations to come.

“A wide range of stakeholders is being consulted – including industry, plantation growers, environment groups and scientific experts – and I urge everyone with an interest in a sustainable forestry future to register their interest in the panel’s progress at https://www.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/forestry-industry-action-plan.
