ROAD WIDENING AND SAFETY BARRIER INSTALLATION ON HUME HIGHWAY AT KYEAMBA GAP
Motorists will soon experience safer journeys on the Hume Highway at Kyeamba Gap between Tarcutta and Holbrook.
Dr Joe McGirr said more than $2 million is being invested to install safety barriers along a 2.5-kilometre stretch of the highway and to widen some sections as part of the NSW Government’s Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative.
“In the five years of validated crash data to 30 June 2020, there were 11 crashes on this stretch of road, three of which resulted in moderate to serious injuries,” Dr McGirr said.
“Most crashes were run-off road crashes that occurred on curves.
“Flexible safety barriers can reduce the severity of high-risk crashes by up to 95 per cent.
“These safety upgrades will reduce the likelihood and severity of run-off road crashes along this winding section of highway that features narrow shoulders and roadside hazards.”
Dr McGirr said that while in the area, crew will also be carrying out work to permanently close the crossover between the northbound and southbound Kyeamba Gap rest areas.
“This work is in preparation for future upgrades in the area and will improve safety movements for all motorists along this section of the highway.”
Work will be carried out weekdays from 7am to 4pm from Tuesday 10 September to Friday 18 October, weather permitting.
Single lane closures, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during work hours for the safety of workers and motorists.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, follow the directions of signs and traffic control, and allow an extra five minutes’ travel time.
Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.
